8 THINGS TO DO ON LABOR DAY WEEKEND
It may be the unofficial end to summer, but hopefully not the end to sunny days. San Diego has experienced the coolest (not cool) summer on record. In fact, I think today will be the 7th day of sunshine. Please don’t tell me summer is over…I’m still wanting to go to the beach, play volleyball, ride my bike, and I’m not ready to put away my sundresses. Yet, I just got the Fall issue of the Pottery Barn catalog, I see pumpkins in the stores, and sweaters laid out neatly as I walk by the retail shops. So, enjoy the dog days wherever you are…and if you are in San Diego (or thinking of coming to SD) let’s think positive….think sun….
HERE ARE 8 THINGS TO DO IN SAN DIEGO ON LABOR DAY WEEKEND.
1) Take the Ferry from Downtown San Diego to the Coronado Ferry Landing and enjoy the shops and restaurants.
2) Take the trolley to Gaslamp Quarter and walk the historic 5th Avenue. Shopping and restaurants. Also, take the trolley to Old Town and walk the 15 historical sites and enjoy the mexican restaurants. Or take Trolley Tours for a historical tour.
3) Festival of Sail, 2010. September 2 – 6th. This annual event is a salute to the tall ships from all over the world. Enjoy the parade from Harbor Island, Shelter Island, Coronado Island and ending at the Maritime Museum docks. This is for the entire family, with a variety of events including a petting zoo for the kids. You can tour the ships and watch mock battles.
4) Mission Beach is a great place to ride bikes on the boardwalk from the Pier to the Jetty, or play volleyball, or go to Belmont Park and ride the Wave, or Roller Coaster. Many shops and restaurants as you walk (or run) the 4 (one way) mile boardwalk. Take 5 freeway, exit Grand/Garnet, follow west to Mission Blvd., turn south (or left) to West Mission Blvd. and park behind the roller coaster. Plenty of parking along Mission Blvd. north of Grand, as well.
5) Harbor Beach – Oceanside’s largest beach. Rent kayaks, bicycling, whale watching, running or sun bathing. There are over 24 bonfire pits, which make for a fun family outing and the perfect evening. Take 5 freeway to north county and exit Harbor Drive west. Plenty of parking.
6) Torrey Pines State Park and Beach is a great place to sun, swim (lifeguards on duty), boogie board, hike. Take 5 freeway and exit at Carmel Valley Road, head west and take a left at the coast. Parking diagonal at the beach or pay park ranger for State parking.
7) San Diego Zoo – What can I say..this is a great place for the who family. We have a baby Gorilla that’s causing a stir, since he’s having his 2nd birthday. I think he is a riot, and if you’re not careful, you could spend hours watching him.
8) Sea World is not to be missed if you are in San Diego. Such a fun place for the whole family.
Have a fabulous and safe Labor Day weekend…I would love to hear what you are doing to make your long weekend memorable.
