3-DAY WEEKEND HOLIDAY
Someone said to me, what are you doing over the holiday. Holiday? Long Weekend? Time off? I don’t know those words.
I work in a business where when others have time off….I work. When others have a long weekend, or a holiday, or time away from their 9-5 job, I am working 5-9.
I remember when I worked in a corporate business, 9-5, getting benefits, having my insurance included in my plan, getting coffee breaks, long lunches and looking forward to Friday…watching the clock as it ticked away. Little hand on the 5, big hand on the 10, 11 and then 12. I looked forward to having 2 days to spend thinking about anything else, but work. Those were the days.
Then I thought how nice it would be to be independent. Run my own business. Take time off when I wanted. No boss. No underground parking space. No clocking in. Come in when I wanted. No one telling me what to do. No HR. That would be the life.
Ahhhhh…the life. Now, I begin my day at 5am to get in a work out and home to shower before the phone starts ringing at 7:30. I fix problems with escrows, work out difficulties with buyers and sellers who can’t negotiate who will fix what, show property at all hours, at night, on weekends, early in the morning. I answer my phone until 10pm at night because that’s what I do. I’ve cancelled holiday trips with my kids to show property to people flying in from the east coast. I’m late to dinner, change plans at the last minute, cancel dates, drive clients to the doctor, pick clients up from the airport….and why? Because I love that it’s not 9-5. I love the independence and the freedom. I love fixing things. And, in the end, I love that I’ve made a difference in someone’s life.
I am in Real Estate. It is my business. I list property for sale. I sell homes to buyers. I work on holidays.
I hope everyone has a safe Memorial Day with their families…and remember those who have fallen so we can be independent.
CLASSIC CARS IN LA JOLLA
It’s that time of year again. The Classic of classic cars make their way to the La Jolla Cove at Scripps Park on Coast Blvd. on Sunday, April 3rd for the 7th Annual Motor Car Classic. Tickets are $35 in advance, $40 at the door.
See everything from the 1914 Rolls Royce in the Horseless Carriage division, to the muscle cars of the 60’s, the British Sports cars, and American Sports cars and German cars. Great fun for the entire family…and the weather forecasts….sunny and warm.
1ST DAY OF SPRING IN BIRDROCK
I was hoping to wake up to a bright, warm, sunny day in La Jolla. It was not meant to be.
Beginning yesterday, Sunday, March 20th, in downtown San Diego, I held an open house in a condo on Market Street. It was cold and the wind was blowing. After setting up 12 signs, I entered the condo and turned on the lights. An hour goes by. No visitors. 2 hours later, I look out the window….I can see two of my signs are upside down in the middle of Market Street….I run out to retrieve them. I put up my hands to stop the traffic. I run across the street as my scarf takes off in the wind…the phone starts to ring, the traffic is building, and I see a couple standing next to the condo I have open. They yell…”we’ll come back later”. No…don’t leave…I’ll be right there….please….you’re the only visitors I’ve had in 2 hours….Who says Real Estate isn’t stressful?
Wherever you are I hope you are having a nice First Day of Spring. Here, in Birdrock, La Jolla, CA….not so much.
THE DAY AFTER “SUPER MOON” – SPRING ARRIVES
What happens the day after “Super Moon”? Is it “kinda Super Moon”? I decided to check it out and see. I’m sure it just doesn’t get small the next day. Let’s see.
In some parts of the world it still shows large and bright.
In other parts of the world, it appears normal.
I’m sure going to miss this big, beautiful moon. See ya in 20 years Mr. Moon.
WEEKEND TO DO’S IN SAN DIEGO
Here are three activities you can do this weekend in San Diego.

YOUTH FITNESS EXPO – BALBOA PARK (FREE!!) Begins at 1:00 in Balboa Park.
TECHNOLOGY GOES ON VACATION
A vacation is not always a vacation from technology.
Besides packing clothes, make-up, shoes, sunglasses, sun block, and anything else I might need for my much needed vacation, I realize I need to stay “connected”. Not sure why, except I never want to be too far away from my technology toys.
I started thinking about what charger I needed for my phone. What charger and converter I needed for my camera. What charger I needed to charge my “hands-free” phone. What charger I needed to charge my phone when I am in the car I rent. I also need my iPod, so need a charger for that…oh, yes, and I need the head phones. Also, need my charger for my computer. Not sure if I should put this in the same category, but I need my hair dryer. Well, why not? It plugs into the wall, and I need to pack it.
It’s beginning to look like I need more for my technology world than I do for my entire vacation and what I wear?
If it’s anything like when I pack clothes….will I need or use all these gadgets when I’m on vacation….in Hawaii.
GOODBYE 2010 – HELLO 2011
HAPPY NEW YEAR TO EVERYONE….
MAY 2011 BE A HEALTHY, HAPPY, SAFE, PEACEFUL AND PROSPEROUS YEAR.
A WET CHRISTMAS WEEK IN SAN DIEGO
This has been a crazy week in San Diego.
We haven’t seen this much rain in…..forever.
So many vacationers are here for the Holiday Bowl (12/29) and the Poinsettia Bowl (12/23) and yet they are either hold up in their hotels watching reruns of Oprah, or braving the flooded roads and heading to our “open air” malls. The good news is, it’s about 60 degrees, and the 7-day rain is supposed to end sometime tonight.
To all those visiting from Nebraska, or the east coast…I apologize…but, I am hopeful you will see sun…..soon.
WINTER SOLSTICE, FULL MOON, LUNAR ECLIPSE
Happy Winter Solstice, and welcome to the official 1st day of winter, beginning at 6:38pm. Although for most of the country, including this very wet San Diego, winter arrived a week or two ago.
I love December 21st for two reasons.
First, today is my mother’s 85th birthday. Happy Birthday, Mom.
Second, 12/21 represents the shortest day of the year… the most hours in the day that are dark. Sunrise 6:47am, sunset 4:47pm. Beginning 12/25, the days begin to get longer…more light. And, for someone who gets up by 5am to work out, I can’t wait.
Today is rare. First day of winter, full moon and full lunar eclipse. Hmmm. Possibly buy a lottery ticket…or better yet,buy real estate.
BLACK FRIDAY IN REAL ESTATE
On Black Friday, as millions of “deal seekers” set out in the wee hours of the morning looking for a “steal”, I make it a point to not be one of them. I think of how much money I save by staying home. I love to shop…but not with a crowd.
I think Realtors miss the boat here on Black Friday. We should be holding every house that is available on the market “OPEN”, beginning at 6am. Can you imagine OPEN HOUSES at 6am? We could slash prices for just 1 day…..12 hours. We should have lenders at each house ready to pre-approve the buyers, and with prices SLASHED we may have buyers lined up out the doors….Well…just a thought….Maybe next year.
If you’re shopping for a home, think of this. Prices on most homes have been adjusted, and those homes still on the market are looking for an offer…and will take less than the list price. Interest rates are still very low…So, why wait?
In La Jolla (92037 zip) there are 234 homes on the market, $599,000 - $29,500,000 – and 178 condos for sale, $199,000 – $8,750,000
In Downtown San Diego (92101) there are 444 condo/townhouses for sale, $110,000 – $6,750,000
In Mission Hills (92103 zip), there are 72 homes for sale, $280,000 – $3,095,000
There are many more homes and condos available throughout San Diego County, most (if not all) of them you could buy less than the listed (retail) price.
Like retail sales, home sales will help the economy. So, why wait in line, or get up before dawn…shop for your home online without leaving your house. I’ll help you find the right house, and negotiate that price with the seller….just call me.
