THUNDERBOATS ROAR INTO SAN DIEGO’S MISSION BAY
If you are looking for something to do this weekend, September 16-18, head to Mission Bay Park and you can experience the monster boat races at the San Diego Bay Fair. Lots of food, bands and good…NO…great fun.
TAKE ME OUT TO THE BALLGAME
I love baseball. At one time I was playing on 3 different teams in Los Angeles. An advertising league, and 1 city AA fast pitch league and a Rec Slow Pitch League. I would drag my kids to games and practices. I even coached my son’s little league team in the San Fernando Valley. Then helped with my daughter’s little league team in Hollywood. Those were the days. In youth you have the energy and always find the time.
When I moved from Los Angeles to San Diego, I had to split my allegiance between the two teams. I loved…and still do….the Dodgers. And each year the Padres lure us into believing they can do it in the end….I am disappointed in the end.
But Friday, April 8th I had the opportunity to watch the Dodgers play San Diego. It’s still a fun rival game to watch…..but after many rain delays (yes, real rain in SD), the game was called and the remainder will be played Saturday afternoon, prior to the next game in the freeway series.
With baseball….like other sports, for me, I’d rather play than watch, but with the Dodgers and the Padres, it’s always fun to watch. But, who do I root for? I love in San Diego, but my heart will always be with The Dodgers.

SUMMER IN LA JOLLA…AND IT’S JANUARY?
It’s incredible to see the rest of the country either flooding from excessive rains, or in a deep freeze. Here I sit in La Jolla putting on my sunscreen, and turning on the A/C in my car.
I moved to La Jolla for two reasons. Water and Weather. We have our May Grey, and June Gloom. And this year…we even had Gloom in July, but that doesn’t rhyme. Then August, when we should expect temperatures in the 80’s, we had temperatures in the 70’s…it was overcast, cloudy and some days, cold.
But here we are, January and temps in the 70’s, sunny, warm and the perfect weather.
Here’s something fun to do in La Jolla.
The La Jolla Gliderport is a great place to watch the weather, wind and the water. The wind takes these daring flyers close to the cliffs as the up-air brings them dangerously close.
If you are visiting San Diego, or want to go someplace for lunch, try the Cliff Hanger Cafe. Enjoy a bite to eat while watching these brave souls take off in flight.

HOLIDAY BOWL IN SAN DIEGO 12/30
San Diego will be the host for the Holiday Bowl where the Nebraska Cornhuskers and Washington Huskies will meet up in the 33rd annual event at the Qualcomm Stadium on December 30th at 7:00pm. The Honorary Chairperson is basketball Hall of Famer, Bill Walton as the Parade Grand Marshal.
I always love the Holiday Bowl because it brings people (gamers) from other parts of of the country where the weather can be pretty severe. When they arrive in San Diego and they see the sun….and feel the warmth….they don’t want to leave. So welcome Washingtonians and Nebraskans….enjoy our town….soak up the sun….eat our food….and have fun….we love that you are here.
The Holiday Bowl is more than just a college football game, it’s events for the whole family.
On 12/30 there is a 5k morning run kicks off the Big Bay Balloon Parade on Harbor Blvd. at 10:00am. Tens of thousands will line the parade route on Harbor near Ash. Click Here for info.

CHALLENGED ATHLETES FOUNDATION – TRIATHLON
This Sunday, October 24th marks the 16th year the Challenged Athletes Foundation will sponsor the San Diego Triathlon Challenge.
Each year this event is sold out early. Why?
Originally this race was held to raise money for Jim MacLaren who suffered injuries while on the bike while he was riding in a race in Orange County in 1994. The accident, so serious he should have been dead, rendered him a quadriplegic. His friends rallied to raise money for his needs by hosting a small triathlon in La Jolla. They called it the San Diego Triathlon Challenge. Who knew this would be the beginning of something bigger. Something that would benefit challenged people (not just athletes) all over the world.
Over the years the race has grown to a limit of 700 athletes and has turned into a spectacular event where both disabled and able bodied athletes can compete together as a team, or separately. Last year, over 1 million dollars was raised to support the wheelchairs, prosthetics, and bikes requested by boys and girls, men and women all over the world. Over 4500 have benefited from grants given by the CAF.
Click here for more information about how grants are distributed.
This Sunday, beginning about 7am, the La Jolla Cove will turn into a hub of activity for all athletes and non athletes. Fun for the whole family. It will not only be inspiring, but the course is such a challenge, even the non-disabled will find it difficult. Athletes may race the entire course ( half ironman) or join a team and race one of the legs.
The course, 1.2 mile swim, 57 mile hilly bike, and a 13.1 mile scenic run. What could be more beautiful and inspiring? Great location, fabulous athletes, heartwarming and inspiring.
So, here is to Jim MacLaren, who passed away 3 months ago, and to all the leaders and athletes who donate, participate and support the CAF. HAVE A GREAT RACE!!
